Bleaching

Bleaching is a procedure in aesthetic dentistry that aims to lighten the natural tooth color and reduce tooth discoloration. It is a popular treatment option for people who suffer from discoloration that can be caused by various factors such as coffee, tea, nicotine or certain foods.
Tooth color can also change with age.

There are various methods of bleaching, including

  1. In-office bleaching: This method is carried out in the dental practice. A highly concentrated bleaching agent, usually based on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, is applied to the tooth surface and, if necessary, activated with a special lamp or laser light. This allows teeth to be whitened quickly and effectively in just one session.
  2. Home bleaching: With this method, the patient receives custom-made trays and a bleaching gel with a lower concentration. The trays are worn by the patient at home, usually for a few hours a day or overnight, over a period of several days to weeks. This allows for gradual whitening of the teeth in a controlled and comfortable environment.
  3. Combined whitening: Sometimes a combination of in-office and home whitening is used to achieve optimal results. For example, an initial quick whitening can be done in the dental office, followed by continued whitening at home to maintain and improve results.

Bleaching is generally a safe and effective treatment method when performed by a dentist or qualified professional. However, it is important to note that not all types of discoloration respond equally well to bleaching. For example, discoloration caused by certain medications or dental damage may not be completely removed.
In addition, good oral hygiene is crucial to maintain the results of bleaching. This includes regular brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
Before undergoing whitening treatment, it is advisable to seek advice from a dental professional to determine whether whitening is the right option and which method is best suited to meet the patient’s individual needs.
